Fibromyalgia is a condition that has become increasingly more common,
especially among women. This condition is characterized by
widespread pain all over the body and often comes with increased
fatigue and depression. Fibromyalgia has become, in my
estimation, a dumping ground diagnosis. Doctors will usually give
this diagnosis when all else has failed and they don't know what to do
with a patient anymore. Often the treatment is an anti-depressant
that will cause the pain to numb somewhat, however this is no long term
solution. The patient will still feel the pain and fatigue.
One of the worst things about this condition
is the social stigma that comes with it. Most people believe that
this problem only exists in the head of the person experiencing it and
many docotors will treat you more like a mental patient than a person
with physical pain.
The good news is that help is out there.
Fibromyalgia is caused by fascial restrictions which can put up to 2000
lbs of pressure per square inch on pain sensitive areas and cannot be
seen on any standard tests like x-rays, MRI's, or CT's.
Restrictions can be found anywhere in the body and are often nowhere
near the pain. A therapist using myofascial release can find the
root of these restictions and relieve them, thus returning the patient
to a healthy, pain free lifestyle.
