Depression
has become a major problem in America over the last three decades and,
despite all the studies and new medical treatments, very little is
known about what causes depression. There are many studies that tie
depression to a chemical imbalance in the brain but these studies don't
go any further. A chemical imbalance in the brain is not the root
of the problem, it is a symptom of an even deeper issue.
In order to understand the root of the
problem, it is important to understand what the fight or flight
reaction is. A fight or flight reaction is what happens when our
body becomes stressed by something that threatens our life or
well-being. When a fight or flight reaction is triggered, our
body is sent into a hightened state of alertness and energy with the
release of a chemical called adrenaline. Adrenaline gives us
immediate energy which will enable us to run from attack or to fight
the attacker. This is a natural primal response that comes from
our instincts to stay alive.
Now lets talk about how fascial restrictions can affect the fight or flight response (for more information on what fascial restrictions are, click the "What is myofascial release" link above).
When you get a fascial restriction, sometimes it can trigger a fight or
flight response because the body is suddenly in need of extra energy to
perform its ususal tasks. This is very much like the body going to
battle against itself as the restriction will resist any movements that the body is trying to make . This is fine for
short periods of time which allow the body to rest and recover, but if
these fascial restrictions go untreated for long periods of time, then
the fight or flight reaction will stay activated.
Fight or flight reactions that are activated
in this way over extended periods of time cause the body to wear
out. As the energy depletes due to fatigue, depression will set
in. This is what causes the chemical imbalance, the up and down
of energy in response to the increasing fatigue in the body.
Anxiety will also become an issues as the body tries to compensate for
the lack of energy by adding more adrenaline, which in turn
raises the energy level only to drop suddenly back into depression when
the body gets worn out once more. It is a vicious cycle that those
suffering from depression know all to well.
The good news is there is hope. Using
myofascial release, a talented therapist can release the restrictions
which will stop the fight or flight reaction and give the body some
much needed rest. Once the body is rested, normal function will
return and one can then enjoy a depression/anxiety free
lifestyle. The depression free life you desire is waiting for
